James Robert Zerda -- aka Jimmy Z, aka Jimmy the Saint, aka Jiminy Cricket aka Jimbro, etc, etc -- left us to begin a new adventure on Friday, February 17 in Fredericksburg, TX at 24 years of age.
Jimmy was born on August 7, 1981 in Houston, TX. He spent parts of his childhood years in England and Wales where he first became interested in the field of acting. He was part of an acting group called the Tenby Players as an infamous child actor, and no one will ever forget his rendition of a poem called “A Potato Clock.”
After returning to Houston, Jimmy starred in numerous school productions at Strake Jesuit Preparatory High School. He then moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where his interest in film continued to blossom. After winning the Overall Teen Actor award at the MB Expo and receiving numerous agency offers, he decided to move to Los Angeles, CA to chase the Hollywood dream and develop his career. Since then he divided his time between Los Angeles and Austin. For Jimmy there weren’t enough friends to meet or lives to touch in just one city or even one state.
Jimmy was ambitious by nature. He was on the road to stardom in more ways than one. He is credited for various prominent roles in independent films and other acting projects. Some knew him as Lars the aspiring porn star, others as Frederico Unfinni the Italian male model, some may have recognized him as a Camp Tarawa Marine and there are even a couple who may recall a breakthrough role in a spanish Del Taco commercial.
Jimmy continued to chase adventure. He recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain to spend a week with his best friend Jeff and stir up some trouble in a country he hadn’t hit yet. They survived the pigeons, practiced their Spanish and returned with many stories to tell and pictures to share. He was currently filming a pilot for a TV version of the movie “Friday Night Lights.” He was also in the process of developing a coffee shop business in Austin, TX and in the final stages of publishing a “Bean Man” comic book based on a coffee bean character he created that grew to serve as a mascot-type for Jennifer’s Coffee in Studio City, CA.
Jimmy was an amazing entertainer, actor, comedian, writer, connoisseur of coffee, bartender and most of all friend and hero to all. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Katherine, older brother David, younger sister Angela and grandparents Elvira, John and Anna Marie. A truly comprehensive list of survivors could not be contained on this web site alone. In fact, we don’t believe that it could be contained at all.
Friends and family will come together this week to celebrate the life of Jimmy, Our Saint. A casual remembrance service will be held Wednesday, February 22 at 7pm at St. Ignatius Church in Houston, TX (no need for coats or ties) to be followed by a funeral service Thursday morning at 10:30am at Prince of Peace Catholic Community Church (details below). We would like to ask that in lieu of flowers or other contributions that anyone interested please consider a contribution to "Sending Out Servants" in care of Prince of Peace. Jimmy participated in Sending Out Servants while he was on summer vacation in high school. SOS is a missionary team from both the churches mentioned that serve our sister parish in Guatemala. The team has recently started an educational fund for the Mayan children at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Chiche, Guatemala. After speaking with one of the team members who knew Jimmy, we understand that they are considering renaming the fund in his honor. Jimmy was very fond of the children he met in the small village of Chiche, and we think he would be pleased. We greatly appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. We thank everyone for all their love and support and for being a part of Jimmy’s life.
